Reading, English Language Arts in Fourth Grade
Basics for 4th grade RELA (subject to change since school is also in flux these days!)
- Agenda: Your child should be writing homework, quizzes and their word study words into their agenda at the start of each week. Please check this regularly and encourage your child to use and reference their agenda daily.
- Homework: RELA homework is available for pick up each Monday and is due every Friday.
- Morning Work/Spiral Review: Students pick up a spiral review sheet each Monday that has work for each day. These are checked daily in class. Every other week the Friday spiral review sheet is taken for a classwork grade.
- Word Study Quizzes: Every two weeks students learn a new set of ten words and grammar skills. A quiz is given at the end of the 2 week review period.
- iReady Reading: Students are expected to PASS 2-3 iReady reading lessons per week. Students sometimes have class time to begin lessons and it is always a choice for the REAL Time choice board. However, completing this as part of homework may be necessary to reach the 2-3 lessons passed each week.
- Types of Assessments (NEW for 2021-2022):
- MAJOR: An assignment or assessment that is cumulative in nature, measuring multiple standards/skills, and/or where there is a significant amount of dedicated instructional time devoted to the content being assessed.
- MINOR: An assignment or assessment that measures an individual standard or subset of standards/skills within a unit and/or when there is a small amount of dedicated instructional time devoted to the content being assessed.
- PRACTICE: Daily assignments, observations, and/or engagement activities given in class or for homework given to students to build and/or remediate skills.
- Grade Recovery:
- Students who earn a 79 or below on a MAJOR assignment are eligible for recovery.
- All students will have one attempt to redo/retake one major assignment per 9 week semester.
- Students are eligible to earn a replacement grade on a redo/retake no higher than 79.
- Student redo/retakes must be completed before the next major assessment is given or 5 school days before the end of a marking period if there is not another major assessment given (exceptions can be made for students who have excused absences during this five-day window).
What will my child study in RELA this year?
Reading - Literary & Informational

40 Book Challenge
Students are invited and strongly encouraged to participate in the 4th grade 40 book challenge. The 4th grade RELA team is passionate about creating classrooms that celebrate literacy and foster a love of reading. We spend some time each day during the first few weeks of school establishing specific routines and setting high expectations around independent reading time in the classroom. Students set up their reading notebooks with resources that allow them to easily track the books they have read, are reading and want to read next. Students are challenged to read across 11 different genres, pushing them outside their comfort zones and hopefully introducing them to a new genre that they may find a love for. A running total of books read for each class is posted prominently in each classroom, creating a little added incentive.
